Autumn Talks 2018: Cherishing God’s Earth – 28th October, 18th November & 25th November

This year we have decided to devote our autumn talks to the important issue of the environment and what it might mean to take greater care of it. Christian faith offers a number of insights, others also hold some important perspectives. So we hope that this series of three talks & meetings will bring together people from any background or group who want to think about this important issue. All events are on Sundays and start at 15:30 in St Mary’s Church, Wallingford.

First World War Centenary Celebrations – 11th November

11thNovember 2018 marks exactly 100 years since the end of the First World War. This centenary offers us a unique opportunity both to honour those who gave their lives and also to commit ourselves to work for peace in our world. There are a number of events taking place nationally and St Mary’s Church is very keen to be a part of these events and to involve our local community in them.

The following is a summary of events scheduled for the day:

  • 11:00               Act of Remembrance – The Market Place
  • 17:30               ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’, St Mary’s Church, Wallingford. Wallingford Parish Church Choir will be singing the complete version of Karl Jenkins ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ in St. Mary’s Church.  The work is incredibly powerful, poignant and moving and will help us all to reflect on the horrors of war, and the sacrifices made by so many young people so long ago.  The work is based on the movements of the Mass and shows the descent into the horrors of war but ends with a hopeful message that peace is better than war and that God shall wipe away all tears.
  • 18:55               ‘The Last Post’, at the War Memorial and nationally
  • 19:00               Beacons will be lit at suitable sites nationally
  • 19:05               ‘Battle’s Over – Ringing out for peace!’ Bells in 1,000 churches and cathedrals will ring out in celebration of the end of the First World War. Here the bells of St Mary’s will ring out in the town
  • 19:15 – 19:30 A Vigil for Peace, St Mary’s Church, Wallingford
